Transporting many tonnes of product to more than 1,300 stores in over 800 communities across the country is a challenge. To ensure we deliver fresh, high quality food products we rely on fleets of company and third-party owned and operated vehicles.
During 2008, the vehicles in these fleets travelled more than 65 million kilometres to deliver products from our distribution centres to our corporate, franchise and affiliated stores. This is the equivalent of almost 85 return trips to the moon!
While we understand that the transportation of goods to stores has an environmental impact, it is a fundamental, irreplaceable part of our business. Since it cannot be eliminated, our focus is on continuously working to identify and implement ways to reduce the kilometres travelled, and on using equipment and technology that results in reduced transportation-related environmental impacts and costs. We work with our third-party fleet service providers to do the same.
