Regional fleet travel reduction and fuel efficiency initiatives
During the past year, our regional logistics teams have implemented various initiatives to reduce fleet travel and improve fuel efficiency. They include:
Sobeys Québec
- Installed computerized routing systems at three facilities which, combined, are reducing delivery travel by approximately 300,000 kilometres annually.
- Started a cross-docking operation in Rimouski, a staging facility where products are sorted, consolidated and stored before being shipped to local area stores, which enables the company to service 10 stores located in the Bas St-Laurent region, while reducing fleet travel by over 110,000 kilometres annually.
- Started using FMZ fuel maximizer®, a technology that is installed between the accelerator pedal and the engine control module, that governs engine power in real time according to the load being hauled. The use of this technology is expected to improve fuel efficiency by 5-7%.
Sobeys Atlantic
- Installed energy-efficient trailer refrigeration units on all trailers, which is projected to reduce fuel consumption by approximately 4% per year.
- Provided "Driving for Fuel Efficiency" skills training to drivers to encourage driving habits that will improve their vehicles' fuel economy by approximately 5%*.
Sobeys West
- Used Long Combination Vehicles to transport product between distribution centres. This mode of transportation enables one tractor to pull two trailers, which eliminates the travel that would have been required by the second tractor by over 630,000 kilometres annually.
- Provided "Driving for Fuel Efficiency" skills training to drivers to encourage driving habits that will improve their vehicles' fuel economy by approximately 5%*.
