Welcome to the first Sobeys Inc. sustainability review.

Sobeys has been serving the food needs of Canadians for more than 100 years. As we continue to grow and expand our operations, one thing doesn’t change – our time-tested approach to creating value for our customers, employees, suppliers and the communities in which we operate.

For an organization like Sobeys, which operates from coast to coast supplying more than 800 communities with many thousands of products, the issues around sustainability are complex and significant. We recognize that we can have an enormous impact on the sustainability of our environment – locally, nationally and globally – through the products we bring to our customers, our business practices and our relationship with our communities.

We do not have all the answers today, but we are committed to building upon existing initiatives with the development and implementation of a formal long-term sustainability strategy and to demonstrating continuous improvement year-over-year.

Of course, sustainability is not a distinct initiative separate from our core strategy. It must be integrated with our strategy and our progress will stem from the ideas, commitment and the determined actions of our 85,000 employees and franchise affiliates across all areas of our business.

Our sustainability approach – which will continue to evolve – is simply a component of our journey to be widely recognized as the best food retailer in Canada. We know that delivering on our sustainability targets will require an investment of capital and effort, and we will assess these investments with the same diligence with which we make all of our business decisions. I expect that many, if not all, will yield efficiencies and cost savings to our business over time.

Implementing a sustainability strategy is not just the right social thing to do. It makes good business sense. I look forward to updating you regularly on our progress.
