Turning out the lights for Earth Hour

Each of our Sobeys regions is committed to reducing the environmental impact on their communities through participation in Earth Day or Earth Hour. In the Atlantic, Ontario and West regions, all stores, distribution centres and offices participated in Earth Hour in 2009 for the second year in a row by shutting off all non-essential lighting at 8:30 p.m. for one hour. Across Ontario, Earth Hour resulted in a 6% or 920 megawatt decrease in energy consumption compared to a regular Saturday night and Sobeys’ Ontario stores were pleased to contribute to this reduction. This event not only conserves energy within our buildings, it helps to create community awareness of the impact we can make individually and collectively to reduce our impact on the environment.
