Seafood

Sobeys' extensive stakeholder engagement process culminated in the public release of our sustainable seafood policy. Our policy, announced in October 2010, states that by 2013 we will no longer sell any seafood species which has significant sustainability issues unless it has an improvement plan to address those issues. More detail on our policy, our engagement process, and activation of our policy in our supply chain can be found in the Supply chain – Sustainable seafood section of this report.

Packaging

Our intensity target of a 5% reduction in our private label packaging weight is defined as kilograms per 1,000 items. We are in the midst of a significant data collection process to enable us to report more completely on this target.

Sustainable/Ethical Sourcing

This initiative is on ensuring fair labour practices among the suppliers of our private label products in countries which our international risk assessment sources define for us. The issues that are included in this assessment include child labour, forced labour, freedom of association, discrimination and harassment, health and safety, compensation, hours worked and overall management practices that effectively address and ensure compliance and improvement. We continue our stakeholder engagement process to ensure that criteria are defined in ways appropriate to the supplier's context. Targets are in process of being developed. The Supply chain section of this report explains our baseline status on key metrics and progress on supplier engagement and determining our baseline status on key metrics.
