Making sustainability visible and actionable
Sobeys Inc. is actively engaged in some near-term and medium-term actions to help make sustainability more measureable and actionable, including:
- Introducing a web-based tool that provides visibility on a quarterly basis to our operating regions on their progress towards reaching our 2013 national sustainability goals
- Introducing a web-based sustainable seafood metrics system for our seafood suppliers to input monthly data into about our seafood sources, which enables us to consider the sustainability characteristics of the seafood we sources along with cost, quality, and food safety
- Working towards a sustainable packaging decision support tool to help private label vendors accelerate packaging improvements and aggregate cumulative results
- Working towards a social compliance tracking system of our private label suppliers' sustainability status to help us make informed decisions during our procurement process
- Participating in a global initiative with the Consumer Goods Forum to develop standardized life cycle assessment systems for products in our supply chain
- Participating in a Canadian initiative with GS1 Canada to add sustainable packaging characteristics, based on the Global Packaging Project, to the product information found in the industry-wide Canadian grocery product registry
- Advocating with various levels of the Canadian government and industry stakeholders the need to create a shared life cycle inventory library to reduce the cost and time required for businesses to perform life cycle assessments independently
