Sobeys has established our carbon footprint using a Canadian grocery industry-developed tool that is compliant with the World Business Council for Sustainable Development/World Resources Institute (WBCSD/WRI) GHG Protocol (www.ghgprotocol.org). Using this tool, we can identify our high performing operations, use their performance to define our benchmarks, seek ways to improve the performance of other facilities and report on our progress. The metrics on which we’re primarily focused include energy consumption, refrigerant usage and waste management/recycling.
Sobeys has established two quantified environmental objectives to be met by 2013:
- To reduce our GHG emissions by 15%,
- To reduce total waste production by 30%. This goal includes:
- A 50% reduction in plastic grocery bags distributed to customers, and
- A 5% reduction in private label packaging.
We are in the process of defining supply-chain goals for sustainability. These goals will include ethical and fair labour practices, environmental management, packaging reduction and sustainable seafood harvesting.
