To commemorate Earth Day 2011, Thrifty Foods introduced the Earth Day sustainability suggestion contest. The contest challenged all employees in stores, distribution centres and offices to suggest ways for Thrifty Foods to further reduce their environmental impact.
The contest generated over 60 great suggestions that focused on opportunities for enhancing existing energy conservation practices and increasing the volume of waste diverted from landfills.
Thrifty Foods' management is currently looking for opportunities to incorporate a number of these suggestions into the operations' existing and planned energy conservation and waste reduction programs. Through their internal newsletter, employees will see how their ideas take shape and keep up-to-date on the progress of Thrifty Foods' ongoing sustainability efforts.
