Reducing stores’ environmental impact
Sobeys Ontario
In addition to implementing a number of the energy conservation initiatives mentioned above, Sobeys Ontario is participating in the Ontario Power Authority (OPA) Demand Response program. Under this program, an advanced lighting control system has been installed in 118 Sobeys and Price Chopper stores. This system allows Sobeys Ontario to automatically reduce lighting in these stores when provincial demand for electricity is high. The region can now reduce electricity consumption by 1.5 megawatts on demand. This helps to alleviate supply shortfalls that could cause brownouts or blackouts within the province.
In addition to the financial benefits received by Sobeys Ontario through participation in this program, the OPA expects that the reduction in demand for electricity achieved through the Demand Response program could reduce the province’s long-term need to build additional power generating facilities.
Sobeys Ontario is also equipping all new stores with Dual Path rooftop HVAC units designed to reduce electricity and natural gas consumption. The units have been installed in four stores where they’re expected to reduce annual electricity consumption by almost 562,000 kWh and natural gas consumption by over 200,000 m3, saving over $116,000 in annual costs and reducing greenhouse gases by over 500,000 kg.
