Since the launch of our first structured sustainability efforts, we have made steady progress to reduce our environmental footprint as it relates to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and waste management.
Sobeys is committed to continuously analyzing and implementing initiatives in our operations to minimize our energy use and improve waste practices use to reduce our environmental impact.
Across our retail network we are working to reduce GHG emissions throughout our various operations. We have made significant progress in addressing refrigerants, transit emissions, and energy usage, including the use of electricity and heating fuels.
As of December 2018 we implemented a robust energy data collection and reporting tool to track energy usage and create internal energy reduction targets.
We are consistency implementing energy conversation and efficiency projects across the organization and continuously monitoring the environment progress of completed projects. 16 stores are currently piloting over 100 energy saving initiatives that will help inform where we can make the biggest impact.
We recently partnered with 490 stores to LED retrofit nearly 5 million square meters of overhead lighting – a savings of 51 million kWh. This project resulted in combined energy savings of more than 40% for those locations, approximately the electricity used by 6,289 houses per year.
We have reduced the impact of leaks by replacing refrigerants that have a high Global Warming Potential (GWP). In FY2019, we converted 100 stores’ refrigeration systems to low emissions CO2 refrigerants.

Diverting waste from landfills generates many environmental, social and financial benefits. We have collaborated with our waste management partners in widespread efforts to reduce the amount of paper, cardboard, plastic and organic waste sent to landfill.
