Sobeys

A message from Sobeys Inc.

At Sobeys, our company purpose is to be a family nurturing families. That has never been truer than right now. Our family of brands is doing everything we can to help our local communities through this crisis. There is nothing more important to us than the health and safety of our teammates and our customers. This is a pivotal time for all Canadians as we navigate the changes required to fight the spread of COVID-19. Sobeys Inc. is here to support families, friends, teammates and communities across Canada as we work to stay safe, nourished and healthy. Together, we will get through these tough times.

Letters To Our Valued Customers

We’re adjusting our hours.

We’ve temporarily updated our hours to ensure stores are sanitized and restocked for the next day. Sobeys stores will be open 8 am to 8 pm every day.

Many of our stores will be devoting the first hour of operations to those most vulnerable and those who require extra attention, particularly seniors.

Visit our store websites to find store hour information about your local store.

Steps to protect our teammates and our customers

We are doing everything we can to keep our teammates and customers safe in our stores. We will continue to assess and implement new measures as needed. To date, we’ve

  • Installed plexiglass cashier shields as a safeguard to protect our teammates and customers.

  • Reduced store hours from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. to allow more time for extra sanitization efforts and stocking our shelves.

  • Added extra resources to the frontline, enabling cashiers to wipe down common areas even more often.

  • Introduced “Seniors Shopping Hour” for the first hour of the day, providing the most vulnerable among us with a dedicated time to shop for goods.

  • Installed floor markers at check out to help facilitate a two-metre distance between customers.

  • Created a process for our teammates to wash their hands every 15 minutes.

  • Stopped the sale of all bulk baked goods and bulk foods in self-serve areas, such as dry nuts and chocolate-covered almonds.

  • Closed self-serve areas that are not staffed by a teammate.

  • Cancelled all product demos, sampling and events in our community rooms.

  • Encouraged all teammates who feel sick to stay home, and implemented the procedures recommended by health authorities for those who have travelled or have been exposed to others who have travelled. We’re supporting our teammates who need to be away from work because of self quarantine or to care for family members at home so they do not need to choose between their health or family and their income.

Taking inspiration from #Bloved at Sobeys Belmont, we have launched “Seniors Shopping Hour”.

Many of our stores will be devoting the first hour of operations to those most vulnerable and those who require extra attention, particularly seniors.

The government has made it clear that those most at risk, including seniors, should stay home and encourages family, friends and neighbours to help support them during this terrible coronavirus. But for those that need to get out for essential supplies, let’s make shopping a little easier.

Seniors Shopping Hour are not currently offered in Quebec.

Is Sobeys Inc. doing anything to support local communities during COVID-19?

We have introduced the Community Action Fund across the country, empowering our fellow teammates and more than 1,500 stores to help find local solutions for their communities’ most urgent needs. Our stores know their communities best, and this program will result in an immediate infusion of millions of dollars into communities across Canada, allowing for quick, direct action.

Take our Dartmouth team in Nova Scotia, for example. We heard that LakeCity Works, a social enterprise that provides employment opportunities for people with disabilities, was struggling to feed their vulnerable clients who were self-isolating due to high risk. Without hesitation, Team Sobeys Inc. joined forces and used the Community Action Fund to create pre-packaged hampers with core shelf-stable items to help ensure that the LakeCity Works clients have access to essential pantry items for weeks to come.

Is Sobeys Inc. hiring additional employees during COVID-19?

Yes. To keep pace with the essential needs of our customers, we are hiring to support our stores and distribution centres. Please visit the Sobeys Careers page for updates and to learn how to apply.

Is Sobeys Inc. running out of food? I’ve noticed some empty shelves in stores.

We are receiving regular shipments of supplies to our stores, and our teams are working hard to keep our shelves filled at this unprecedented time. We have every confidence in Canada’s strong and secure food supply chain, and our warehouse and distribution teams are working around the clock to speed up the movement of food and supplies to our stores to refill shelves. If you see an empty shelf, know that it will be full again shortly.

What will you do if one of your store employees tests positive for COVID-19?

We will always do everything we can to keep our teammates and customers safe.

  • We strictly enforce that teammates who feel sick do not come into work.
  • If one of our teammates tests positive for COVID-19, we will follow the direction of public health every step of the way.
    • We will close and deep-clean as directed by public health.
    • We will work closely with public health officials to investigate the teammate’s known points of contact and recent shifts. To keep stores safe, we will notify all teammates who require self-isolation for two weeks.
  • We have created a new page on our website to keep all Canadians informed of our evolving response to this challenging situation. We will post up-to-date company and store specific information below.

We will continue to update our COVID-19 tracker to be transparent with you where we have been notified of cases of COVID-19 in our stores. Out of respect for our teammates and their confidentiality, we will never release any personal information about our people. We will always do everything we can to support our teammates and ensure their safety. Where required, we will communicate with customers who have shopped in the impacted location, with store signage, outlining our steps to manage the situation.
